National Equity Project Leading for Equity Institute

March 22-25, 2012  Westerbeke Ranch, Sonoma, CA

Why attend the Leading for Equity Institute?
To explore these questions:

  • What are the equity issues in your school, district, organization, or community and how can you take leadership to diagnose and address them?

  • What strategies and approaches can you use to build trust, have productive dialogue and take informed action with members of different racial, socio-economic, or language groups in your community?

  • How can you utilize professional learning opportunities to deepen your equity work?

What is the Leading for Equity (LFE) Institute?
The LFE Insitute is a residential institute where individuals and teams from schools, districts, and community organizations receive expert, caring guidance and facilitation to work together to address the personal and technical challenges they face in their educational equity efforts.

We define “leader” as anyone who takes responsibility for what matters to them, and we work with leaders on developing their capacity to foster positive change on behalf of historically underserved students and families. This experiential institute provides ample opportunities for sharing, reflection, and planning to inform your current work.

Participants will examine:

  • The effects of racism and other biases on education policies and practices
  • Individual and organizational dynamics that impede the success of change efforts
  • How to improve collaborative relationships and build teams and alliances in diverse settings
  • Concrete skills for leading change in challenging contexts toward your current equity goals
  • The importance of emotional intelligence and trust in leading equity efforts
  • Research, tools, and other resources for equity-focused leadership and team development

“Large and successful change efforts start with  conversations… Change doesn't happen from a leader announcing the plan. Change begins from deep inside a system, when a few people notice something they will no longer tolerate, or respond to a dream of what's possible… Together we will figure out what our first step is, then the next, then the next. Gradually, we become large and powerful. We don't have to start with power, only with passion.”
-Margaret Wheatley, Turning to One Another
